Recently re-opened in what was previously Up The Wall and doubtless countless other things before that, it bills itself as a Bar & Kitchen which might imply some sort of upmarket gastro-pub type of operation. If that’s your expectation, then you’re going to be sadly disappointed. There was certainly nobody eating on our recent Thursday evening visit or any sign that they offered food. Even if they did, it’s certainly not somewhere I would choose to eat, and I can’t imagine that anyone in their right mind would either.

There’s a good sized terrace with wooden decking at the front of the pub which is undoubtedly the pub’s best feature with views across the beach and towards Knightstone Island, although the furniture here was rather uncomfortable with cheap looking metal tables and chairs. Internally it has suspended tiling on the ceiling which always strikes me as being more suited to an office than a pub, some sort of plasticky imitation wood strip on the floor, bookcase wallpaper to the right and a long expanse of plain white walling to the left, with no attempt having been made to brighten it up with contrasting colours or add anything else of interest. Seating was rather dated looking red velvet chairs whilst a table top Pacman game was just inside the door along with a TV screen mounted on the wall, although this was not in use on our visit. A number of England flags were strung around, so presumably football matches are screened. The juke box was in use though, and one table of punters were enthusiastically singing along and making a right racket. Even when the juke box was not playing, their volume level was undiminished. The loos were apparently in a rather sorry state, with the gents unusually having just a single cubicle rather than any urinals.

There were no real ales on tap unfortunately, and in fact I’m not even sure that there were any keg options, although I did notice several bottles of Doom Bar being consumed. Ciders meanwhile were Thatcher’s Gold and Thatcher’s Haze. Overall, I can see no reason to visit here other than to perhaps sit outside and enjoy the view, but then there are also plenty of other options nearby that offer that. To be fair though, the staff seemed friendly and bade us a cheery farewell as we left.
