Having not expected to have time for a beer in Castleford I hadn't done any research for my trip to watch Hallam FC play up the road in Glasshoughton, but as I started my walk towards the ground I was pleased to find myself opposite this nice looking micro pub, and I didn't take a lot of convincing that I had time for a half. This is a very well set up pub, with a decent sized bar on the right having six hand pumps at the far end and about 20 keg fonts on the wall behind. The young lad who was serving was friendly and welcoming, asking about what sort of beers I liked and offering me tasters. I just plumped for Salamander Bend Over, despite its rather odd name, and this was a very good traditional bitter in super condition. Looking around I saw quite a number of bits of writing on the walls; professionally done, these consisted of snippets of lyrics from (mostly) famous songs, interspersed with explantions of terms such as "abv" and "ibu" as well as diagrams of an alcohol molecule and other bits of brewing information. I thought this was an innovative and interesting idea, and I spent a few minutes identifying the songs, being momentarily stumped by "And when I touch you I feel happy inside". I'd only previously drunk in two Castleford pubs, but will have to give some thought to a further visit so that I can pop back in here for more beers and more lyrics. Oh, and the background music was pretty good too.

One room, seating at front, left side and rear. Bar to right middle. Six hand pumps with a decent selection. Could spend some time here with no problem. Only trouble was the darkish lighting - could hardly read my paper!

Longish thinish, shop conversion, micro similar but much less spacious than their Selby one. Seating is tallish stools at the counter and at tall tables down the opposite side, there's a bit of bench seating made from chipboard in the window with a couple of small picnic tables. A large blackboard at one end of the counter shows the multiple beer choices, there are six cask and 20 kegs. The other walls have mainly well known slogans, lyrics and cartoons painted on. Separate male and female toilets at the far end.
