Rather quiet on my visit, maybe down to the time of day and location, seven handpumps with five Southbourne beers, the brewery is located within the pub, also a couple of beers from Tingays. There is a stage at the opposite end from the bar with an impressive display of musical instruments, mostly guitars, mounted on the wall behind.
Due to the emptiness of the pub I found it a little downbeat, maybe it buzzes in the evenings.

There isn’t much I can really add to PSM’s detailed description, below, which is still extant. Ales on draft were a stout, Stroller, a brown ale, Beach Comber, and a pale ale, Cliff Riser. I had the latter, which was enjoyable and a great complement to the relaxing jazz music in the background. There was also Dorset Sunshine cider on draught plus two boxed ciders. The locals weren’t the most welcoming, though. I’d include on a crawl, and it would be a reasonable place to spend an evening.

Just up the road from Bournemouth Triangle, this is an excellent little brewery bar set in a former car dealership at the top of Poole Hill. You enter into a bare concrete floor room which betrays a few little marks of the building’s former use, with the servery positioned over to the left and the brewery visible through windows along the back wall. Some nice old chairs serve a few tables opposite the bar, with more seating over to the right and in a darker space in the back corner. An upright piano in the centre of the room is apparently used for occasional pub sing-along sessions and there are some great bits of brewery artwork and photos relating to the building’s history dotted around the room. Stairs lead down to the basement area which includes a room full of bits of art by local artists, most of which was for sale, a table football game and a fair bit more seating. Moving on towards the rear, there is the highly original sight of a tiny cinema which the owners plan to use for mid-week film screenings. A very friendly barmaid spent a lot of time chatting to us on our quiet afternoon visit, explaining about the brewery and the plans they have for the pub, which was very interesting and made us feel very welcome.
Rather confusingly, the brewery is not called Poole Hill Brewery – that is just the name of the pub – but is instead known as Southbourne Brewery, as this is where it began life. Three of their beers were available when we arrived – Paddler, Cliff Riser and Sunbather – plus guests of Gyle 59 Elderberry Stout and Sixpenny 6D Gold. All of this was detailed on a large beer board to the right of the beer, which gave accurate descriptions of each beer and detailed others that should be on soon. We sampled most of the offerings during the course of a stay that was a lot longer than originally intended, and found them all to be in great shape.
I really liked this place, which feels like a vital addition to the town’s drinking scene, even this early in its existence. We found the place to be very welcoming, with great beer and lots of interesting plans for community engagement. A great project and I hope they have a lot of success in the future.
