A new opening from the husband and wife team behind Bravas, Cargo Cantina and Bakers & Co, this is on the site of what was the short lived Meat Liquor restaurant and prior to that, a central heating supplies store.
Internally it consists of one long, open plan room and the décor style is quite minimalist, certainly a bit of a contrast to the urban graffiti that was all over the walls in it’s previous incarnation. In fact the colour scheme now is very much black and white with whitewashed walls, a black ceiling, black padded bench seating around much of the perimeter and oversized white paper lanterns and white stencils hanging from the ceiling. Large full height windows at the front make the most of the outlook and whilst it’s not particularly scenic, it is, I suppose, a good spot for people watching. Flooring was parquet wood which seemed a little out of place perhaps, whilst the remainder of the seating was old school chairs. A table football game was towards the rear of the pub.
The food offering is unusual in that is provided by a couple of different pop-up vendors, rather than the venue themselves. On this occasion the choice was limited to a few fish wraps from King Fin or a couple of curry options from Temple Mamas, and I opted for a chicken curry. The actual curry itself was quite good, but was completely overshadowed by the (pale blue!) rice, chickpeas and vegetables. If the proportions had been better I’d have said it was quite a decent dish, but as it was I felt rather disappointed, especially given the exceptionally high standard of food found in their other outlets.
Beers on tap were keg rather than cask but were all from Bristol micros and on this occasion were Bristol Beer Factory’s Milk Stout, Croft Ales BS2, Good Chemistry’s Kokomo Weekday and Moor’s Claudia. The solitary cider was Bristol Beer Factory’s North Street. All in all I was a little disappointed with this, but then I did go in with high expectations. Even aside from the food though, there was little in the way of any atmosphere and I would day that there are much better options just a short stroll away.
