Northern Type is a shop converted micropub with bare boards throughout and exposed brick walls up the sides. There is seating in the front window to the right of the entrance and the bar counter is found mid-way up the right wall. Tables and chairs run up the left wall and at the rear is a banquette next to the rear door that leads to a small smoking area. Also at the rear is a fridge full of craft beer cans. The bar supports 8 craft keg fonts, I went for a stout that was very good. No televisions, but there was a bit of Guns & Roses playing in the background. I thought this place was ok, the service was certainly friendly. I’d pop back in if passing.

A great little local pub/tap room which serves a diverse range of craft beer. The owners have gone for a keg only bar but this should not be shunned. The bar has a great local following and the bar stuff are always friendly and helpful. The staff listen to what the customers want and ensure everyone is happy with what is on the taps. With only 6 taps there are always a diverse range of beer on and 2 large fridges full of cans and bottles with anywhere between 60 - 100 different beers to try. On the taps there is usually anything between a stout, sour, IPA, DIPA, pales, darks and anything in-between.
The price is a little higher than the rest of the high street but none of these business are selling this calibre of craft beer. I have been to places which have prices higher than the northern type and it is still cheaper than going into the city.
There is often music playing in the background which is non-offensive and occasionally plays sports.
There is no food served but it does have a good selection of bar snacks.
Child friendly and the place has a selection of games to keep children and adults entertained.

A shop conversion that is self-described as a bottle shop and tap room. Bottles are towards the rear, with open shelves on the left and refrigerators on the right. (I didn't check the contents of these, but a notice on the wall states that there is no surcharge on the take-away price for drinking in.) The bar is on the left, starting near the door and extending most of the way back, with a row of six keg taps protruding from a bare board that hardly deserves the name bar back. The beers are described in a display of typed A4 sheets to the left of the taps. Most of these beers are what I would characterise as extreme, including a milk stout, another sweet beer (featuring maple syrup), a couple of sour beers and two more featuring tropical fruit flavours. I went for what I hoped would be least offensive to my palette: North Brewing Sputnik, a hazy, unfined pale ale tasting largely of fruit juice. This set me back £1.75 for a third of a pint, which is expensive in comparison to Joseph Holt's Mild at £1.23 for a half in several local pubs. (And not such a nice drink as the mild, in my opinion.) Service was friendly and helpful, but a radio was playing in the background, which not everyone will find congenial.
