Stoneworks is a long thin bar with armchairs, sofas and patio furniture found along its length. There is also a shuffleboard table. The back music was grungy, which I quite like so a tick from me. The bar counter on the rear wall has a large selection of craft beers and after gorging myself on Peterborough’s plentiful supply of Plum Porter I quite fancied a stout. Even though there were four choices the lowest abv was 7%, which is a bit much for a crawl, so I went for a can of Brass Castle’s Bad Kitty Vanilla Stout that was 5% and lovely gear. There’s no food but take-away can be eaten. Yes, this is a trendy bar, and I was a bit older than the other three customers, but the barmaid was very friendly and there was a good atmosphere, especially on a quiet evening. I’d have no problem revisiting.

Long thin shop conversion with the counter at back raised up like some altar to craft. 26 taps on the back wall with a hard to read angled thin blackboard above each. Luckily they’d just had a Kirkstall Tap takeover and 10 of their beers were on , so familiar ground if not dispense. Usual eclectic furniture for these places. It was fairly quiet when I visited so didn’t suffer the old man invisibility that Will attracted.

Will Larter left this review about The Stoneworks

After our abortive visit to Puzzles, it was a pleasant change to find a well-trained and motivated server dealing efficiently with a crowd of waiting drinkers - though it has to be said that when it was our turn, she ignored me (£20 note in hand, anticipatory expression on face, trying to make eye contact) and went to my better-looking friend who was merely looking up at the list of beers behind the bar.

This is a craft beer keg palace with about 20 taps in the bar back, each with the name of the beer and the prices for a growler and for 2/3rds of a pint, a half and a third all listed. My only grouch about this arrangement (and of course there has to be a grouch) is that it is difficult to read the display because the writing is on a slant - like a shelf of books that have toppled over. In addition, there is no mention of the beer styles or characteristics. Because the server's back was to us while she was pouring, it was not possible to question her about this until she returned to the counter. Leaving these niggles aside, we were served relatively quickly and the beer was not too gassy or cold.

We went and sat in the small drinking area at the front of the pub and enjoyed our beers in the late afternoon sun. I wouldn't mind coming back here next time we're in Peterborough, though another time perhaps I'll have a third rather than a half of the 9% double IPA.
