Village pub with severely reduced opening hours. It is currently open from 4pm on a Friday and from 2pm on a Sunday. With another of my planned pubs closed on a Sunday, this left just a Friday that I could plan a visit.

I arrived to a sea of smoke emanating from a mobile fire pit cooking meats on the car park. There is a small outdoor seating area near the entrance.

Inside, there are 4 different rooms. There is a dining room off to the left and three rooms to the right. The first contains the bar itself and was where the locals were sat. The bar also seems to double as the village shop.

Beyond that is another small room, which feels like somebody's sitting room. This has access to a pretty garden and another room where Northamptonshire skittles is played. A couple were having a game when I arrived. It is seemingly a very noisy game!

For a 2023 Good Beer Guide, the ale selection was disappointing. Boltmaker is the regular beer. The guest beer on this occasion was Wherry. A nice enough village pub. But with very limited opening hours, I wonder just how much longer it will survive.

You sort of expect somewhere called Litchborough to be rather grand, with a university and cathedral and wotnot, a cross between Litchfield and Loughborough. In fact it's a tiny village, church, pub that doubles as a shop and a few houses nestled in the depths of rural Northamptonshire.

The pub is an ancient stone building, with a small public bar and a couple of other small snugs to the front, with a recent restaurant extension behind. The bar hasn't changed in a decase or seven, with stone floors and a huge inglenook fireplace which must be welcoming on a wintry day. And the welcome is friendly too, with three local brews to choose from, though my Great Oakley Egret was tired.

It's in the GBG and well worth nosing out if you are in the area.
