Previously a shop, this great micro has been adorned internally with softwood and chipboard to make it resemble a garden shed with a small bar at the end. The clientele during this latest visit were locals, a couple of commuters, a bunch of elderly computer geeks (sorry, ‘Specialist Information Services consultants’) and an Irish lady passing around dried seaweed for people to eat. Ales on were Plain Ales’s Inntrigue, Ashover Hawaiian Shirt, Ramsbury Ekuanot, Bristol Beer Factory’s Ply Causal and one from Dawkins. I had the Hawaiian Shirt and Inntrigue, both in excellent condition. Definitely worth a visit when passing or heading to/from the railway station, a good place to get shedded and convenient for a preprandial pint before enjoying curried ostrich in the Indian over the road.

Enjoyed our visit to this bar although with our coach of 20+ visiting early Saturday evening it was rather full, but that didn't stop the staff and locals in there making us feel welcome. There were beers from Ramsgate, XT and Great Heck, but we chose Shed Ales Pail Ale and Twisted WTF both of which were fine.

A Micropub (formerly a shop) which also brews its own. One of the tighter variations on the micropub theme, it felt jam-packed with 12 people in. Laminate floor, wood slat walls and chipboard roof (so it’s like a shed – geddit?). Five ales on from various micros, including a homebrew which I tried (Shed Ales Smokehouse Porter) which was very good and it’s a shame I didn’t have time for another. Also some proper ciders available. Friendly owner and punters and got plenty of chat, even though our group of interlopers had just doubled the attendance and made it standing room only, it’s one of those micropubs where you are welcomed rather than scorned. Worth getting off the train for and I envisage a return visit.
