This is set down a short alley leading off Bridge Street but thankfully there is a sign there otherwise it would be really difficult to find.
The pub is at the end of a short alley on the right where there is a courtyard that is probably larger than the pub itself. Inside it's a rectangular room with the bar at the far end and none of the high tables and chairs often found in these sort of places. It's not a large micropub nor is it one of the smallest.
Four beers were available Just A Minute End of an Era, Wishbone Black Porter, Captain Cook Endeavour and Swannay Island Hopping. I went for the Wishbone Porter (£3.30) which was in excellent nick. All in all another good micropub.

Nice to see Will was in here also ! We called here on a Monday afternoon, where we got a nice friendly welcome from the landlady or should I say owner. There was another couple of drinkers on our visit, who were also friendly and chatty, whilst sitting out on the patio. Four ales on handpump on our visit, which were Almasty Amarillo Pale, Bad Seed Farmhouse IPA, Bank Top Porto Call and Adnams Southwold. I went for the Almasty and Bad Seed, both were excellent. We left here around 3pm, when a group of about ten people were making their way in. One of the locals told us the pub is extremely busy mid week and weekends.

Although it's only been open a few months, this tiny micropub has clearly already established itself in the Berwick drinking scene. A tiny room, added to the back of the neighbouring business and accessed through a gated alleyway, there's barely enough space for a bar, and the furniture consists of four small tables, some chairs and a couple of pews. There are more tables and chairs in the yard outside, with a canopy covering part of the area, but only hardened smokers were stepping out there when we were here the other night.

On the bar are four hand pumps and a cider polypin. There's no lager, but bottles from Belgium and Germany are available in the fridge behind. A menu details the small snacks that can be provided, or delivered on request from the local tapas restaurant.

Plain white walls are adorned by a few Belgian beer adverts, and by the depiction of the portcullis with clock behind which illustrates the pub's name, deriving from the town's curfew bell which is traditionally rung at 8pm. The pub closes at 9pm on weekdays - which early hour was partly an inspiration for the name - and 10pm at weekends. There's no music or TVs, just conversation and banter between customers and staff. Beer is mostly from English micros, partly because of the difficulty obtaining deliveries from Scotland: two available at the time of my visit came from Liverpool Craft Beer Co and Bank Top of Bolton. Both the beers I had were in excellent condition and reasonably priced, and I was told that the bottled beers are 50p cheaper than the equivalents in Barrels along the road.
