The seating behind planters, and a bit of trellis, on the path out the front of the Old Post Office was all taken during a recent Sunday afternoon visit, but thankfully it was less busy inside. There is some seating on a stone floored area by the entrance and then some steps lead up to the small bar area and then more steps lead up to some pew seating at the rear. This is a small pub so it wouldn’t take many to pack it out, thankfully it would seem that I visited at the ideal time to have a look around. The walls and ceiling are adorned with a host of oddities, including lots of ecclesiastical pictures, paintings and also a psalm number board. The was some mood music playing in the background, I’m not really sure why.
The bar counter supports limited keg and four hand pumps, although there were five cask options of Fixed Wheel Brewery’s Wheelie Pale, Northampton Brewery’s Phipps IPA, Froth Blowers Brewing’s Barking Mad, North Cotswold Brewery’s Moreton Mild and a decent pint of Bass. This is a good pub, but I did find the young barman to be a bit frosty, he needs to lighten up a bit.

ORIGINAL REVIEW April 2016

This micropub has a very attractive interior which alone merits a visit. The three levels break up the interior and there is fine wood panelling to the right of the entrance with traditional furniture .A Fokker hangs from the ceiling ,a collection of stuffed animal heads on one wall but an inverted Batman obscuring a fine mirror opposite seemed over the top.At the rear there is a pleasant bar along the left wall with stillage and handpumps on display, while a small lav was off a rear room with some more tables and chairs. All very well done.
On the real ale front the selection was a little disappointing with nothing above 4.4% and not a great range of styles on offer. Nothing wrong with my Church End What the Fox's Hat and Salopian Vapour Trail ,just a shame some of the more interesting ales from those very solid brewers were not featured here. .However there was a charming barmaid who was a lot of fun and gave an excellent curry house recomendation and also said that as the pub doesn't serve food they are happy for people to bring in a takeaway and they will supply the plate and cutlery.
It's in the GBG and popular with CAMRA types but beware the strict 9pm closing time as part of their licence condition.Worth including on any crawl around Warwick.

UPDATE
Now in new hands and its much improved. Some of the over the top decorations have been removed, the pub feels a lot cleaner and the ale selection is more varied (including a good North Cotswold Shagweaver MBSS 3.5),and the craft keg options well worth a pop too.(I sampled Vault City Blackcurrent Session Sour and Brubl Baltic Smoked Porter )The new owner is very knowlegeable about beer in all it's forms and gladly offers advice and tasters.CAMRA types wont balk at the ale selection here although the co owned Eagle will have a more adventurous slant with high ABV bews. The locals are friendly and chatty and we stayed much longer than first planned.Upgarde to an 8 and now a must visit in Warwick.

Quirky micro, where no expense has been spared on interesting nick nacks that can brighten up a place. A WWI fighter plane and a hot air balloon? We'll hang that from the roof. Stuffed and mounted animal heads.... that'll do for the walls. What can we do with a false leg?

A lower drinking area. Bar reached by narrow steps.

A good choice of cask (although I had not heard of the breweries) and craft keg.

Pricing got me thinking. All keg is £6 and the ABV was less than a couple of the cask, which were all £3.80. So quite a considerable jump in price. Even the Irish Stout was £6. Personally, I dont mind paying more for higher ABV craft. Maybe just me. Glad, I wasnt in a round :-)
