If you want to meet the local characters and the eccentric owner, then this is the place for you. I found this micro quite comical from start to finish in a good way. The owner handed us out about three good sized samples of beer straight from the rear cold room and what was left in the glasses he immediately necked them down. There were three ales on stillage and we settled on the Billericay Rock and Roll and the Hopback Crop Circle, which were decent enough but served too cold. We found a seat near the front of the pub and a lady sat at the front window was trying to say something to me, but unfortunately she was so well oiled her partner had to pick her up and carry her out along with their shopping bags. This was around 5pm, so they must have started early. There was also some small hand bells dotted around the tables, which were used for table service.

Medway's first micropub is housed in a former shop in the middle of the High Street area. The single small front room is carpeted and has a couple of high tables and a few comfy chairs. A quarter of the room is taken up by the glassed 'cellar' where the casks can be seen. The staff are very welcoming and chatty, as you would expect, while the clientele are a complete mix - football fans, locals and CAMRA types are the core clientele, while there are one or two visitors and a couple of people waiting hopefully for a new Wetherspoons in which to cash their giros. Six ales and a cider on cask today, most with a seasonal theme. I had a pint of Rockin Redbest from the nearby Rockin Robin microbrewery. An essential visit when in Gillingham and definitely a must for a town crawl.
