Formerly the Horse and Groom, this former inn now looks like the sort of conference facility that advertising executives would meet in. Externally, there's almost nothing to say that it's a pub, bar a sign that states "Cock and Bull steak house and bar", and even that's not very promising. Not sure if there would be any real ale on, in fact almost certain that there wouldn't be, I opened the door with a certain amount of trepidation, only to find a smart modern hotel-type bar with three hand pumps adorning its over-lit and glossy surface. There were quite a few people in at the time of my early evening visit, which is perhaps not surprising given that two out of the three pubs in the centre of this large village have closed down. Beers on offer were Loweswater Gold, Marstons Pedigree New World and Jennings Cocker Hoop. I went for the latter, which was in surprisingly good shape. Perhaps that appears a little condescending, but considering that the pub makes no external mention of the fact that it serves beer, never mind real ale, it's a bit of an eye-opener to find such good quality stuff on offer.
