Blackthorn _ left this review about The Living Room

Now known as Missoula, this is much more of a bar/restaurant type establishment than your traditional pub although there is nonetheless a bar counter with a selection of fonts and a few high stools to sit and sup your pint. It’s recently re-opened having been shut for a few weeks during it’s conversion from The Living Room. Despite being only it’s third day of opening, the staff were all unfailingly helpful and knowledgeable with only some rather slow service at the bar letting it down somewhat.

Missoula is apparently the capital of Montana and the pub consequently has something of a rural American theme with a large outline of a cow’s head in the window and cow hide on a number of the chairs. Otherwise the décor is fairly generic with a strip wood floor and khaki green paintwork. The pub is spread over two floors with the downstairs being an L-shape room with the black granite topped bar counter and an old dresser off to the left.

Open tread stairs lead to the upstairs area which has a mezzanine level floor at the front which offers good views over the surrounding roads and office blocks due to the glazing that covers the entire front of the building. Behind this is smaller dining room which consists of bench seating up either side and a number of tables next to them as well as down through the middle. This was quite dark with low hanging globe lamps so may either be described as atmospheric or gloomy depending on your point of view. The wall to the left was covered in wallpaper depicting suitcases whilst some shelving on the right housed a number of vases and such like.

Food wise, the American theme continued with a number of steak and burger options as well as some bison dishes. Main courses were mostly somewhere around the £10 - £12 mark, although obviously some of the steaks were much more. My Chicken Madeira sautéed with creamy Madeira mushroom sauce was a surprisingly tasty dish and a decent portion to boot. You could choose from a selection of side dishes to accompany it, one of which was complimentary which makes a pleasant change from the usual uninspiring bland vegetables or chips. A complimentary dish of popcorn was also brought out to the table which was an unusual touch.

Unfortunately there were no real ales on tap, or, it would appear, any beers at all other than some American craft options which included Shipyard American Pale Ale and Anchor Steam from San Francisco. The solitary cider was Magners. The drinks menu did however include a good selection of spirits as well as a number of cocktails and alcoholic shakes, or even a bottle of champagne for £250 if that's more your thing. I tried the Salted Caramel shake, and whilst it was pleasant enough and the Baileys and Southern Comfort were very much in evidence, I didn’t really notice the caramel.

This is a slightly tricky one to mark. What it does, it actually does quite well and it was better than I expected. On the other hand, this is a pub review website and consequently I should probably mark it on that basis. it’s clearly not that pubby, and with no real ales on draught it has little to recommend it from a purely pub point of view.
