Traditional cottage-style pub with the bar to the right of the entrance corridor and a larger (seemingly disused) lounge at the back. Very basic furniture and decor, but a welcome roaring real fire on a cold wet evening (with a curiously placed dartboard directly above). No real ale, and just four keg taps, but with the Banks's Dark Mild, Mansfield Smooth and Strongbow cider all off, the 'choice' was Carling (£2.70) or nothing! With just the owners and two groups of three regulars in, all circled around the hearth, wandering in as a stranger (possibly the first since Soup Dragon over six years ago) was a slightly surreal experience.

This is a detached Victorian pub, likely built to service the two former neighbouring furnaces and the canals nearby. It is a typical cottage-style pub, with two bay windows flanking the central entrance. The pub is in cream, with black paintwork. The interior still holds some of that Victorian charm. The entry is through a passage, where there a two rooms off to the right, both served by an island serving bar. The first room is the bar, which is in cream, with cream painted beams, and some brown, with a white ceiling and hard lino floor. It has a 60s feel, and i could imagine Mr and Mrs Bobby Moore popping in for a swifty. It has a dart board and a gas fire, with some odd ornaments and old photos on the walls. There is a TV (not on) and there was nobody in. The back room is a lounge and more modern. It was busy here (with mixed ages) and darker, but the walls seemed cream in colour and it had a laminate floor. There is a TV (not on) and a few pictures of actors/musicians on the walls. The service was fine. Beer; no real ale - just four taps, one of which was Banks's Dark MILD - but alas, normal MILD was dispensed, which seemed a little past its best. Nothing for the real ale drinker, but worth a pop in for a half, just to see the pub.
