Peering through the fairy light lined front window of Vesuvio I could see an empty laminate floored bar with the owner busying himself behind the counter at the rear. To be honest, it looked thoroughly depressing, so I toyed with the idea of walking past, but my OCD kicked in and I found myself approaching the counter where there were three craft keg options alongside three hand pumps, two of which were in use drawing Crafty Monkey Brewery’s Reward IPA and Portobello Brewing’s APA. While waiting for the quirky governor to flick a switch in the back room to allow him to pull my pint I noted a beer shelf with stools up the right-hand wall and shelving with wines and books up the left. In the centre of the room are stools with barrels as tables and the lone table in the front window is where I enjoyed a pint of the very nice Reward while listening to some background music that was new to me. Being the only customer there was no atmosphere, but I’m sure this is different on Sundays when there’s live music, or maybe on alternate Thursdays during the open mic nights. I’d revisit if in the area when there are some other customers.
