The Market House Inn is a proper boozer, which was a welcome delight after just visiting The Shambles… strewth! Facing the entrance is the bar that supports three handpumps. One was unused so only St Austell’s Tribute and Sharp’s Doom Bar were available. Standard and Premium keg was also available. To the left of the entrance is some seating overlooked by a television that is mounted above a fireplace, Sky Sports is shown. To the right are a couple of tables before a step up to the pool and dart area. Upstairs is a small lounge type area with a large television, which I’m sure is prime location during major sporting events. The food stretches to scotch eggs which are under a cover on the bar. I forked out £5 for a black pudding one which lined the stomach nicely for another couple for hours of sloshing it down. The governor was very friendly, he even spent time giving other dining options to people that were looking for something more substantial to eat than the scotch eggs. No problem returning here.

This is a splendid grade II listed Georgian style building that dates from the mid 1800’s and is now owned by Enterprise Inns. The interior is one large square room with a dark wood bar counter and stained glass panels above in the back left corner, a stone fire place with dark wood mantle piece in the middle of the left hand wall, half wood panel around the left of the room and full wood panel around most of the right hand side and stone floors with some red quarry tiles just in front of the counter. To remind you that it is 2012 there is a large flat screen TV above the fire place which was off and in the back right corner is a pool table. Above the pub is a restaurant which I briefly glimpsed on the way to the gents up stairs.

Ales on this visit were Flowers Best Bitter, Dartmoor Legend and Friggins. I tried halves of all three and found them to be in decent enough condition, in fact the Legend was very good.

A good traditional drinker’s pub with some character, lots of dark wood, stone and stained glass give the impression that if the TV and pool table were removed it would be like stepping back in time. The bar staff were helpful and there was a nice atmosphere, a couple of elderly ladies were sat having a cup of tea during my mid afternoon visit! A pleasant experience so I would return if in this part of the town again.

Quick touristy visit during the May Music festival, so my experience my not fully reflect the "norm"

One large downstairs bar, but divided up, restaurant upstairs, but food is available downstairs as well

It was busy, mid afternoon on a sunny May Sunday, but the staff coped well, with a smile & charm. Due no doubt to Festival a limited selection of Ale was left, in fact I did attempt a Royal Wedding special but the barrel dried up half way through my pint being pulled, but my second, and Hobson's choice was fine, no idea what it was but it was fine

Parking from what I could see is going to be very hard if not impossible [see photos], drinkers & smokers spill over outside, but all were friendly

Toilets are upstairs, and one set of stairs is spiral so you could come down more quickly than you intended. There are alternative wider stairs via restaurant

I never tried other pubs in Dartmouth, so there may be better, or worse, but this one was fine
