Modern looking interior. Entrance down a narrow alley, nearly missed it. A Shepherd Neame pub, but on my visit, all the clips were turned around, no real ale at all, so had a Guinness instead. Window views of the Thames.

Having watched a documentary about the Great Fire of London the evening before my visit to the Samuel Pepys I must admit that I was disappointed to find a modern 1st floor bar rather than an historic pub. After scaling the stairs, I found a bright bar with serving counter along the right wall. Windows look over the Thames towards the bankside. I was a little miffed why there are high tables with stools next to the windows meaning that one must stoop to avoid the top of the windows obstructing the view across the river. During my late Wednesday afternoon visit there was some background music playing. BT Sport is advertised in the front door, but I didn’t see any televisions in the bar area.
This is a Shepherd Neame run pub, so the three hand pumps were drawing Whitstable Bay, Spitfire and Summer Strom IPA. A premium keg range is also available, I paid £3 for half a Birra Moretti which I thought was hugely overpriced, but later learned that this was on par for the area. Food is available during lunch and dinner periods. I found the service to be polite in a corporate kind of way, but I do not plan to return here.

A Shepherd Neame tied house furnished in a modern style but situated in what looks like a former warehouse and offering great views across the Thames to the Globe Theatre opposite.Up a stairway ,you enter into a pine floored lounge with a shuffle board to the side.Upmarket furniture including a curved banquette is evident ,but the exposed brickwork around the windows gives much needed character. The views are directly above the bankside and there is a narrow external metal terrace with a few stools for even better river appreciation. There is a side room with a bench seating running the full length of the back wall with some tables set for dining. The menu looked very much pub grub at a slight London premium.BT Sport flatscreens were playing on mute and gentle muzak helped the calm atmosphere. However tables can be reserved at set times and clearly later that Thursday evening it was going to be much more hectic.
There are 3 handpumps , the SN Whitstable Pale was unavailable but the clip not reversed (bad practice) leaving a choice of Spitfire and SN Samuel Adams Blonde Ambition (passable but not memorable).
Good views but dull ale,not sure if I would return for anything but some food.
