A hotel with large bar area perfectly appointed on the bank of the Thames. Entrance is at the first building to the left. To my surprise, there are now two local ales here - West Berks GOB and Old Father Thames, retailing at over £4pp and condition is very hit-and-miss. Internally it's a number of plush carpeted rooms with comfy seating. The main 'bar' area is the most functional room but even that’s pretty high-brow. I sampled (despite the dark and cold!) the fabulous outside terrace seating overlooking the Thames though I discovered that most of the doors were locked one way or another, the ones that actually opened both ways were the set farthest right. Staff were friendly and mainly Mediterranean, though one of them was permanently on the prowl which made me feel a little uncomfortable and ‘watched’. Expensive food on offer, with sandwiches priced at just under seven quid (you at least get to choose your bread!). Piped music was probably staff rather than management's choice I thought. Free copies of the Independents 'I' newspaper available. The proffered Wi-Fi needed an access code. Despite the plush up-to-date interior the toilets looked to have last been decorated in 1980, though they were spotless. Whilst I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a must-do in the area it certainly could be well-worth a slow, (if expensive) pint outside on a summer’s day.

This hotel is in an enviable position right by the Thames at the bridge that links Goring and Streatley. Although it doesn't put itself forward as a pub, there is a public bar down some steps to the right of reception and along a corridor lined with spectacular pictures of sailing ships. There is a small bar with just one hand pump and a number of fonts, with an area in front featuring a number of arm chairs and a couple of stools. Further on the space is almost entirely given over to dining tables, and I really do mean dining – table cloths on every one. Outside there's an outdoor seating area by the river, which is very pleasant.

The solitary ale is Old Father Thames from West Berkshire brewery, very similar to Brakspears Bitter, having the same strength of 3.4%. This was my very first £4 pint – strictly speaking it was priced at £3.95 a pint, but my half was £2. From a drinker's point of view, the only reason to come here rather than the proper pubs in the two villages would be for the chance to sit beside the river.
