A traditional looking stone built pub on the outskirts of Tickenham, this has struggled over the last few years with frequent periods of closure and changes of landlord, no doubt in part due to the difficulty of access – you really do need to drive to the pub. The current incumbents have been there for a couple of months now and seem to be making more of an effort with the food, and it was certainly busier than it has been on previous visits.

It’s a good sized pub in something of an L-shape internally, and is now quite contemporary following a makeover a couple of years back. There is grey carpet on much of the floor with dark wooden laminate around the bar counter. Paintwork is a mixture of pale grey, white and maroon whilst a few colourful scenic pictures were dotted around the walls. A small conservatory is off to one side and next to this is a snug area with a few low sofas, a bookcase and a wood burning stove. Other than this and a few high leather stools at the bar, seating for drinkers looked to be limited with all the tables laid up for food and many reserved. A TV screen was mounted up in the corner, but this was not in use on our visit.

The menu offered a good choice of pub grub dishes such as scampi & chips, ham egg & chips, fish & chips, burger, sausage and mash, etc., and these were all priced at £9.95. There were also a few more adventurous dishes with prices only slightly higher. My sausage and mash was a generous portion and consisted of three sausages sat on a pile of mash, topped with a couple of onion rings and served with red onion gravy and vegetables. Quite a decent dish I thought for the money, and haddock & chips was similarly well received on the other side of the table.

Beers on tap were Proper Job and Butcombe, whilst a third pump appeared unused. A chalkboard next to the bar also listed London Pride, but when one punter asked for this he was told that they didn’t do it. Not that it was off, or sold out, just “we don’t do it”. Quite why it was on the board then, and remained there even after this, I’m not sure. Ciders were well represented with Orchard Pig Navelgazer, Ashton Press, Thatcher’s Dry and Thatcher’s Somerset Haze. Overall whilst it’s nice to see this pub a bit busier and I hope the new owners make a go of it, the contemporary styling is not really to my taste and it’s unlikely to be anywhere I’m going to make a point of stopping at, except perhaps on a sunny afternoon to sit in the large beer garden.

A great big kids playground, noisy and uninviting to the sprogless. Efforts to rally staff to organise a clean table were in vain, the place was a mess and clearly understaffed. In the end we left, pintless (I think there was a Butcombe on) and hungry! Oh dear...
