A cafe bar with two hand pumps fighting for space on the bar among the cakes and pain au chocolat. When I was here there was a good crowd to see a group of local musicians performing their adaptations of some well-known songs, some of which may have been related to Christmas. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, and I was able to park on a corner of the bar and make a good start on the Guardian crossword while drinking my half of Hesket Newmarket Black Sail, which was very enjoyable; the other beer was also local: Keswick K13. (I do like it when breweries give their beers evocative names taken from local landmarks or celebrities.) The bar counter looks like it may have been adapted from something ecclesiastical; the walls are covered with bright artworks, mostly dominated by the colour orange; furniture looks like it has been acquired ad hoc but it somehow belongs. Not being a fan of cafe bars, I was pleasantly surprised by this one, but that was probably because there was such a good atmosphere, which itself may be because most of the people there were friends or relations of the musicians. Or perhaps it's always like that at the Square Orange.

A cafe-bar in central Keswick with two handpumps dispsnsing a beer each from Keswick and Hesket Newmarket breweries. A good place to settledown witha beer (or a coffee) and read the paper or use the wifi.
