A decent community pub that is slightly off the beaten track but only a short stroll from Mina Road, it has a somewhat striking appearance with a large mural covering the entire outside wall of the pub. There is also a decent sized courtyard garden at the rear, which was just as well as the pub was full to bursting point on a recent Wednesday evening visit. Clearly they must be doing something right when many suburban pubs are virtually deserted in the middle of the week.
The main bar at the front of the pub is quite tiny and every available square inch of wall or ceiling (and window sills and mantle pieces come to that) is plastered with stuff. The ceiling was predominantly posters and old beer mats whilst the walls were all sorts of pictures and over-sized playing cards. Elsewhere were paper streamers, paper flowers, fairy lights and leafy foliage. To the rear is another, smaller sized room with low seating and beyond this the courtyard, although due to it’s residential location this is only open until 10:00pm. There is also a skittle alley which was hosting a quiz night when we visited, and another room upstairs with a pool table, darts board and table football game, as well as another bar counter. The walls of the gent’s loos are also completely covered in a mural.
Beers on a recent visit were Dutty IPA, Ubu Purity, Butcombe Rare Breed and Wien Bumby Cake. Ciders were well represented with Thatcher’s Gold, Thatcher’s Dry, Stowford Press on tap along with Stan’s Cheddar valley and Cloudy Apple in boxes behind the bar. All in all, well worth a visit.
