Very good description of this Glasgow dining and drinking icon from Peter below. We were primarily here to dine in the Brasserie restaurant but had a pre-dinner drink in the upstairs ‘Big Bar’. Wasn’t too crowded when we arrived for our Friday evening slot but all three bar areas were fairly jumping with what looked a fairly young crowd when we left.
The Big bar focusses on wines and cocktails (for the target audience I guess) but a couple of draft options were available in the shape of Deuchars IPA and a red bitter from Fyne Ales in Argyll called Chip 71 which I guess is brewed for the establishment. This was quite nice and I had a second one with my Haggis neeps ‘n’ tatties starter.

The Ubiquitous Chip or "The Chip" is situated in the West End of Glasgow on the Cobbled backstreet and rather quirky Ashton Lane, along with an array of other bars all squeezed together and somewhat reminded me of a compact version of Liverpool's Mathew Street.
Opened in 1971 this classy destination has become a Scottish icon and has won numerous food awards specialising and renown for Scottish cuisine. There is a courtyard dining and a roof terrace plus 3 distinct drinking areas,The Big Bar(originally a pre dinner drinking space) The Corner Bar(Mainly cocktails)and The Wee Pub(small one roomed affair)
The Wee pub is the first you come to if entering from Byers Road and is very small and not made any larger with the metal spiral staircase on the right. The beer choice was standard but the barman was pleasant and helpful with info on the pubs in the area.
