This pleasant village pub is a bit off the beaten track and is best approached from the old A10 Buntingford High Street that goes through Buntingford. A right turn to Aspenden takes you under the now main A10 by pass before you reach the pub tucked away on the left hand side as you enter the village.
I guess formerly a multi roomed pub, it’s now one open space with two sections either side of a large double sided fireplace with the side facing the main bar still used as a fireplace but the other facing the section with the tele now converted into a tabled alcove. Fairly plane décor with low beamed ceilings and a nice homely feel
Internally the pub is quite a small place and I would imagine it would get quite cosy when really busy. However it does have the advantage of a large external garden area and an additional inside enclosed room by the kitchen that is primarily used for large groups dining.
The pub is renowned for its decent traditional pub food menu which is how we found it through its decent trip advisor reviews. But we only popped in for a beer whilst in transit home and on this front they have three frequently changing ales. For our visit St Austell Tribute, Adnams Ghost Ship and GK IPA were available , so perhaps not the most exciting selection but the Ghost ship and IPA we tried were in spot on condition.
The pub serves the local community well if the varied pictures of the petanque team and the village cricket team are anything to go by. And the locals from the Sword in Hand in the nearby village of Westmill appeared to be the main competition.
