Run by Good Chemistry brewery, this little pub is rather upmarket in the ‘stripped-back, dim lighting via fairy lights’ manner, a ‘boutique bar’ (Bristol CAMRA’s words) indeed. The gold cornicing is interesting but there isn’t really much else of note. Good Beer Guide listed, it was a massive let-down on the cask front with just the stout on (NBSS 3). There were some crafty choices and a few Belgian things in the fridge. But really, only having one cask in a de facto brewery tap on a Saturday night seems indicative of sloppy management. 6.5

Renamed and under new ownership since my previous review, this is now owned by local micro-brewer Good Chemistry Brewing and despite a couple of their beers on the bar they did not dominate by any means. Certain other brewery owned pubs should take note.

Internally it’s fairly compact being just one, single room with little of any note. It has quite a stripped back look with plain whitewashed plasterwork on the walls and black wooden boards on the floor. Brown and yellow paint on the timberwork provided something of a contrast, and the large plate glass windows that took up pretty much the whole front wall gave it a light and airy feel. Seating was a mixture of old church chairs and stools with some fixed wooden benches at the front. A door at the side led to a small patio area with bench seating made from decking boards.

Beers on tap were their own Time Lapse along with London Pride, Five Points Railway porter and Burning Sky Plateau. Another half a dozen or so “craft beer” options were dispensed from taps on the back wall. The solitary cider was Bristol Beer Factory’s North Street, which I’m not normally that keen on but seemed to go down pretty well. Overall, this isn’t the style of pub I usually go for, but the friendly barman and chilled out atmosphere mean that I’d be quite happy to pop in again if passing.

A relatively recent addition to Chandos Road, this is a small, single room bar with something of an aeronautical theme, as it’s name suggests. There is also a small outside decking area down one side.

The interior of the pub is painted entirely in grey which perhaps feels a little depressing, although the dual aspect windows at least let in plenty of light, and one of these had some stained glass along the top. There is a wood strip floor and various aero related bits and pieces around, including a couple of propellers and sections of fuselage, one of which has been converted in to a shelving unit. Elsewhere were various black and white pictures of old aeroplanes. A plasma was stuck on one wall which seemed a little out of place, but fortunately this was not in use on our visit.

Beers on tap were all keg, and followed the usual “craft beer” approach of being served from plain taps on the back wall with the names written on a board. On this occasion they consisted of Devon Amber, Wickwar Gold, Shipyard, Sharp’s Cornish Pilsner, and another whose name escapes me. The solitary cider was labelled as “Secret cider”. This sounded intriguing, I wasn’t sure if that was actually it’s name or if it was just a secret. Apparently it was the latter, and the barman initially seemed reluctant to tell me what it was. Once I had ordered it, it transpired that it was in fact Carling cider! This was really very disappointing, and not at all what I would have expected from somewhere like this. To make matters worse, it was served in an Aston Press glass which I thought was really taking the biscuit.
