Previously The Railway Inn, although given that it dates from the 17th Century it must have been called something before that. Exactly what appears to be unknown. Like the name, the railway which once connected Glastonbury with Evercreech is now long gone. It’s now a roadside pub that does B&B in better times, but for the moment the new owners haven’t got around to doing that, and there was no food on offer just now. There is a large carpark area on what was once a railway siding, though much of it is currently fenced off with straw bales to increase the outside drinking area, just as well as no-one’s allowed inside. There is also a paved terrace. Sadly, sitting outside was not a particularly pleasant experience due to road noise and the furniture being fairly dilapidated. The barman was a bit clueless, and we had to query the prices which miraculously decreased by 11% when he had gone away and thought about it. The beer was served in paper cups, but it was in good condition – golden, delicious, Wainwright’s Gold was the only ale available, not sure what it was doing this far South, but it was welcome nonetheless. Not a very fruitful visit.
