As mentioned below, this is a substantial pub in large grounds. The inside had some historic features of note (such as the impressive fireplace) though there was a subdued modern veneer to the fairly dark décor. The rear garden was nice (we liked the individualised weaved wooden dividers), though the duck pond was out of action as they were in the throes of digging out many years of accumulated silt, chronicled on a blackboard inside the pub. A very welcome sighting of the local game Toad in the Hole which we had a go at (brass discs are available behind the bar); a dart board was also available but no sighting of bar billiards on my trip. Four ales on and I must say I was very impressed with the condition of all four – the Thwaites Bewdy and Adnams Broadside in particular were both superb (Pride and a Brains seasonal were the other two). Food is pushed and there were a number of people eating but there were also still a number of contended local drinkers in situ. A behavioural code entitled ‘Granny’s rules apply’ on a sign behind the bar was an unusual touch. I was quite a fan of this one and would recommend a trip out to sample it.

The Woolpack is a substantial pub that is set back from the Sussex Way by a large stone covered car park. To the right of the pub there is a grass covered beer garden that houses some picnic tables and a small children’s play area. There is also a duck pond that is fenced off from the garden so know need to worry about the nippers jumping in.
Lunch is served from when the pub opens at midday and I’d compare the interior and food selection as being a step up from a Harvester. I say a step up as around the bar there is some atmosphere and the jovial governor is making an effort with various types of entertainment in the evenings. These include a quiz on Thursdays and the odd ‘folk night by the fire’. There is a ‘Toad in the Hole’ box and a bar billiards table.
Three of the six hand pumps on the bar were unused leaving an uninspiring choice of Old Speckled Hen, Broadside and London Pride. There is also a standard draught selection alongside Amstel and Birra Moretti.

I’m not a big fan of food led pubs, but I liked it in here and would have no problem returning.
