Real Ale Ray left this review about The Queens Head

Large multi-room pub with a small room at the front near the entrance, which featured two red leather armchairs, wood burning stove and piano. Beyond this, there was a central bar which supplied all the different areas of the pub. Colour scheme throughout, was red and cream. Six ales on handpump, Oakham Citra and Pentrich 1817 were excellent. Staff and manager were friendly and chatty.

More open coal fires than the Greens would ever permit, enough premier real ale on tap to curdle the mind of a teetotal preacher, no juke box and no machines. Take me there! The Queens Head at Marlpool near Heanor, a former traditional Shipstones pub, recently reopened following a tasteful refurbishment.

The venue is totally focused on satisfying the demands of the discerning drinker. A minimum of fourteen, and sometimes more, real ales, in prime condition are on tap at any one time. Add to this twenty real ciders and a superb Reinheitsgebot draft lager makes this pub a drinker’s paradise. The Queens, in the seven months since re-opening, has already won awards for the excellent condition in which the beers are served. The secret to this quality lies in the rapid turnover of the various brews and the quality of every brew on sale is checked at the commencement of every session.

The smokers amongst us have most certainly not been forgotten and recently, with an outside temperature of minus six degrees our smokers were enjoying a pint in an outside smoking area toasting themselves in front of a roaring open fire.

Customers are regularly consulted with regard to their preferences and suggestions as to new brews to offer and all suggestions are listened to. The Queens is able to offer any beers that are available as they have no ties whatsoever to any particular supplier. The only criteria is QUALITY.

Castle Rock, Thornbridge and Oakham Ales are ever popular brews that are well represented and always available. Another featured offering is an ever changing Queens Head special, recognised on the bar by the Penny Black pump logo and at £2 per pint is an excellent value premium offering. It is fair to say that The Queens Head is a permanent beer festival.
