Has had a makeover at some point in the last couple of years and is less of a pit now. Three pumps all clipped with Doom Bar but the barmaid said that all cask was permanently off - 'we just didn't sell enough'. She was the only staff member in there who didn't appear to be an idiot, mind you – pity the woman who came in asking if her phone had been handed-in and just got a blank stare from Dumb & Dumber at the other end of the bar with no attempt to take her details. Most punters were eating and the place smelt of boiled cabbage. There aren’t many pubs round this way so I suppose it survives on that fact.

This place has got pretty battered in the interim since my last visit and now desperately needs TLC as the newly-opened Trooper Potts 5 minutes away will surely clean out 50% of this place’s casual punters. Three pumps all clipped with Doom Bar which in fairness was one of the best examples of this liquid I’ve had for a good while and drinking it actually verged on the enjoyable rather than the tolerable. Service behind the bar was the friendly side of Whitleyesque.

Carvery outlet that serves a couple of cheap ales (usually Wadworth 6X and London Pride). Bar to right as you enter, with a fairly decent window seating area. To the rear is a large raised area where the hot meat action takes place. Nothing to write home about but the last place left in Whitley to get a decent drink so that's worth something.

Luke warm food and cold plates. The Doom Bar was good though. Staff very friendly as well.
