The Oaks Hotel, Alnwick

Old stone-built hotel, strategically placed at a roundabout on the edge of town. It seems to have been much extended from the original building and was doing a roaring trade at 4:30 on a midweek afternoon - a funeral judging by the dark clothes and general air of jollity. I was celebrating nearing the end of a 25 mile cycle ride, which felt like a lot more than that on a hot, sunny afternoon.

Four hand pumps on the bar with Lilley's cider on one, Taylor's Landlord on another, and one from Alnwick Brewery, which is a couple of miles down the road. A hazy "summer pale" made with New Zealand hops would not normally be my cup of tea, but on this hot day it seemed to hit the spot. The bar back here is an extraordinary affair - see photos - unique in my experience.
