With no other places open beyond 12:30am on a Monday night, the Beer Engine ended up being our final stop for a nightcap in Liverpool. With bouncers on the door, this can turn into quite a lively place.

It is set over a number of levels. We sat on the upper level to the rear, which has access to the same long bar as the ground floor room. Although, I'm not convinced you could get served there. There were TVs showing sport and at least one pool table that was in use. Music was being played at a fairly loud volume.

Down another flight of stairs is further seating and an open kitchen, which continues to serve food throughout the night (the pub is advertised as 6am closing). Food does go up in price from 2am onwards though. Toilets were also located downstairs. The gents had a fair amount of vomit scattered around. There was obviously somebody having too good an evening.

On the beer front, it's all keg, despite a couple of redundant handpulls near the entrance door. The selection was ShinDigger Pale & Mango Unchained, Carlsberg, Shipyard American Pale Ale & Portland Lager, Estrella Dam, San Miguel, Brooklyn Defender & Pilsner, Kingstone Press Apple Cider & Wild Berry Cider, Birrificio Angelo Poretti, Wychwood Hobgoblin IPA, Guinness, Erdinger & Bombardier.

This place serves a purpose, as somewhere that stays open when all other local pubs have closed. But I would walk on by if anything else was open. Increasing my score to a 3/10.

Walked into this huge student pub to find 4 handpumps facing us. No beer on any of them, not even turned round pump clips. I asked the barmaid just to be sure, She said that they no longer sell real ale, which is a crap idea for a pub called the Beer Engine. Loads of TV's and assorted machines, but hardly any punters. I'm not surprised as it's crap, so we left as well. I would expect to be doing another name change in the near future.

Now has 3 of the 5 handpulls for real ale working. Higsons Pale and Amber plus Wainwright on. £4 a pint for this lot suggests that its head is still up its bottom. Go somewhere else.

12/8/18:
Now open as The Beer Engine and it has its head firmly up its arse. An expensive load of rubbish. Open plan and stretching back, the bar to the right is in two parts with the back part up a few steps. To the rear is a pool table. There is a downstairs part also. No real ale at the moment so it's vastly overpriced lager-a-likes. £2.90 for a schooner of Tetleys Smooth? Sod off will ya. Still, dickheads will pay it so... . They only do 2/3rds and pints!. Rubbish.

11/6/18:
Now closed again. It is however getting refurbed and renamed as The Beer Engine.

2/2/17
Now reopened as The Legion Of Lost Souls and seems to be mostly an evening/late night venue for baby Visigoths and the like. No real ale of course.

4/9/16
Closed down. Will probably open as another bar shortly but for now its gone.

16/12/15
Has had a refurb. Now much brighter and aa half decent lounge style area to your left where once it used to be black hole like.

27/07/15
A rock music kinda place. Dark, black all over and can sometimes be full of babygoths.
