An excellent example of an 18th Century pub and only a short walk from Spondon's town centre. It was great to have a decent look around, when the pub was quiet on our Monday lunchtime visit and the locals were only too proud to encourage us to see all its nooks and crannies. I liked the way you had to walk through the edge of the bar to get to the small front room. Three pumps serving Courage Directors, Pedigree and Hobgoblin Gold. I went for the Hobgoblin, as I hadn't drank it for quite some time and found it very good.

A village pub, set back from the road, and near enough to the church to get some funeral bookings. The interior is splendidly unspoilt, with the curved, glazed partition of the snug opposite the small bar counter justifying the pub's place in Camra's heritage pubs database. A dining room in an adjacent building also has a bar for use when the room is let out for functions, and there is also a full size snooker table here. Beers on offer at the time of my visit were Pedigree, Sunbeam and Hobgoblin, all from the Marstons stable. The couple who run the pub are from Sheffield, and seemed friendly, welcoming and committed to the pub, but I was told later on the same day in another pub in Spondon that they may be leaving after 18 years.

The Malt Shovel is an old bare brick built pub that is situated near the church in the middle of Spondon, this pub can be hard to find if you dont know the area.
When i first went in this pub it was a Bass tied house with a very nice drink of Bass on the bar,the pub seems unaltered since my first visit.
Once inside there is a drinking corridor with a small room off it to the right, there is also a large dining room to the front,i have only drunk in the corridor area.
On my most recent visit here a couple of years ago there was Pedigree and Bass on the bar,the Bass was still very nice here.
This is one of Spondons better pubs.
