A Chef & Brewer dining place with a thoroughly-refurbished and rather massive interior. Surprisingly large open area around the central bar, with various rooms and a large conservatory extending off. Strong emphasis on dining, as you are greeted with a 'Wait here to be seated' sign, however there is plenty of space for drinkers at the assortment of tables and areas. A lot of the décor is standard C&B but there seems to be a particular preference for medium height benches, which is a little strange. A couple of real ales from the Greene King range were on offer and seemed quite drinkable (Cask Marque certification). The name and some of the wall decoration relates to local connections with Alice in Wonderland.

This is a good sized, traditional looking pub from the outside, although it does appear slightly dilapidated. There's a terrace at the front with a few benches, and a pleasant enough garden. When you get inside it all starts to go downhill though. It's got that identikit, corporate look to it like you get in many pubs that major on cheap micro-waved food. I'm not sure if it's a Hungry Horse or one of it's rivals, but you get the idea. They've already got posters up advertising their festive menu and inviting you to book now.
There were two barmaids serving when we got there. Not only did we get no acknowledgement or apology whilst we were waiting (not that unusual unfortunately) but unbelievably they finished serving their existing punters and then disappeared to go and do something else, leaving me and another guy just stood at the bar. If I hadn't been so dedicated as to do a thorough review for PuG I would have walked out. After a couple of minutes another guy turned up and deigned to serve us.
No real ales on tap, although there was Old Speckled Hen through a lager style font. There were a couple of pumps for Greene King IPA, but these were not in use. The only cider was Strongbow unfortunately. I really can't think of any reason to visit this pub since the Waterloo Arms is only about two minutes walk away, unless perhaps you want a game of pool or to watch the football.
