Turns out that this is run by the crew that operate the rather good Sloop at Porthgain. Similar decor, much planking and a shack feel though it’s quite large which rather stifles the effect. There’s a servery either side of two rooms and the ale pumps are at the rear so don’t be put off on entering. Three on when I visited; Double Dragon, Doom Bar and Evan Evans Warrior (NBSS 2 - put on far too early, a bit fizzy and hazy). Real cider in the form of Gwent-Y-Ddraig. There’s a well-done sizeable multi-tiered rear garden which looked ideal for a sunny afternoon. Of passing interest was a ‘No pub crawling bus parties’ sign – a story there, no doubt.

Central pub, large interior, still has a traditional feel and a bit foody but nice atmosphere.

A former hotel which is now primarily a pub restaurant after a major refit. It benefits from a prime location just opposite the central square in St Davids and at the beginning of the pathway to the Cathedral. It’s primarily two buildings bolted together and an extension added onto the back.
This gives it a large internal space with a large section of it being low ceilinged and with a bit of character, however most of this space is take up by dining tables and is primarily focussed at those eating. But then out back there is a decent multi tiered garden area which makes very good use of a fairly limited space.
The bar does support three hand pumps which were regional brewery ales during my visit and the pint of Rhymney Bitter I had was perfectly fine.
But the main focus is on the food menu and the primary function of this pub is to capture the summer tourist hoards, who arrive in their coach loads into what is now officially the smallest city in the UK.
One point to note is that The Bishops shuts during the October to April months. But that should not be a problem because the one original pub in the City, namely the Farmers Arms, is just around the corner and stays open all year. And as a traditional pub for a beer and pub style grub, the Farmers is the better choice IMHO.
