Pretty dull place serving the beach over the piled rubble and the caravan park. Modern slate floors, grey painted walls, some newly covered red banquettes. Pinball, pool and karaoke. Three cask at the bar which seemed excessive and indeed my Evan Evans WPA was a hazy appley mess – probably put on far too early. A very tense Mexican stand-off at the bar to get more poured through (with the usual litany of excuses "nobody else has complained", "It's meant to be like that"); to no real benefit as the second was as almost bad as the first (NBSS 1.5). Dreadful atmosphere though I suppose I helped contribute but really, if they have no idea what they’re doing…

The Duke of Edinburgh had a strange vibe to it and reminded me more of a social club bar in a caravan site than a proper pub. It’s a strange set up and the beer and food options are OK but nothing above the run of the mill.
Firstly when you enter from the door at the front you are confronted with an entrance foyer from which there is a door to the left and a door to the right, but no indication given of what lays beyond.
On investigation it’s a two roomed pub. The right hand room has more of a public bar feel to it with a single sofa area and then plain wooden tables in the rest. The right hand bar is the posher with more of the comfortable seating, but then this bar area also includes the games room to the side with fruit machines and pool table.
There were three real ale pumps which had Courage Best, and Directors and then Two Dragons, which was unfortunately off when we visited.
I found this a bit of an average place but probably fit for purpose and given the fact that it is the only pub for miles around, and largely the only food place, sometimes beggars can’t be choosers and given that it’s adjacent to the Newgale campsite, it probably doesn’t have to try too hard, especially in Summer.
However the one redeeming feature of the Duke is its location, situated as it is on the large expanse of Newgale beach, and even I suffered a pint of Courage Best after a decent stroll on the sands.
