I was a fairly regular customer here in the 1970s and 1980s. I remember Bass being a fixture, sold on stillage. The pub layout was as Alan describes below, and memorably featured paintings of the local cricket team (unless I dreamt that.)

Today, and I surmise since Alan's visit, all the plaster has been stripped off the walls down to the panelling, but there is still a stuffed owl, and, touchingly, some hats, of those whom I assume to have been erstwhile regulars. The pub is soft-upholstered throughout, giving a cosy and comfortable feel.

There was HPA, JHB, Bass and 6X, along with a cider. I had just scored my two-millionth red* (not green, goodness me no, ladies and gentlemen) arrow on the Daily Mail's comment threads, and so I was in the mood for a modest celebration. I had a JHB. The pub advertised "real food", so we went for the battered fish, chips, and peas. The lady behind the bar appeared with a bowl of flour, and cracked an egg into it, later adding a dash of lager and some soda water, interestingly. You can't say much fairer than that though.

Yes, this is a little gem.

*For those who need a lesson in basic media General Knowledge, red arrows, on the Daily Mail comments, are what its all-too-many, teeth-grinding page-fumblers give to comments that they dislike. They give greens to those of which they approve. Incidentally, why do some people use the word "obviously", when they clearly haven't a clue about what they are writing?

Went in here 4 july 2010 the Chequers has'nt altered in years when you go in the bar is on the left with a narrow drinking area there is a lounge type area at the back of the pub which you have to go up a couple of steps, there are three handpumps with Bass on permantley and two guest beers on,the pub is full of stuffed animals and other brick a brack this is very much a locals pub but you are made to feel welcome by both the locals and landlord this is a really good pub and i would advise anyone to visit this pub.
