A fairly old pub that has been modernised inside and has probably lost a lot of its character. We were initially the only customers on our Friday afternoon visit, but were soon joined by another customer looking to eat.

There are a couple of rooms, front and back, with toilets downstairs. The young barman was quite welcoming, but certainly didn't seem too knowledgeable when it came to beers and pubs. Gem & Tribute are the regular real ales. Proper Job was the third beer, with Rosie's Pig occupying the 4th handpull which was hidden away in the corner.

Much change here. Refitted in a modern style, you can still smell B&Q and is fairly sparse beyond the Griffin motif. Genuinely quiet pub, oppressively so. Four cask with three clipped and one off, leaving a St Austell duo of Tribute and Hicks (NBSS 2) at a ludicrous (even for Bath) £3.25 a half. Can't see it lasting in this guise as it appeals to almost nobody, evidenced by there being only four other punters on what was a fairly busy Wednesday evening elsewhere. Apparently run by St Austell which I find surprising, they usually know how to operate a decent a house. Maybe they let the YTS loose on this one?

A spick-and-span refurbished pub with a modern interior. Laid out over two rooms, with a front and back (Beauford) bar. The interior is a chocolately brown and cream affair, complemented by flock wallpaper and some exposed stone walls. There’s a beer/whiskey barrel in the bar alongside a Watney’s Red Barrel too for good measure. The advertised ‘secret garden’ is in fact a small square! I rather liked the funky clock behind the bar and the friendly barmaid that served us on my last visit. Four (or was it five??) local ales on the go alongside a proper cider. I can’t remember what I had but it was good nonetheless. The downstairs bogs have some quality antique fittings as well as a ‘thought of the day’ blackboard. Board games available at the bar. The visit before last I bumped into and old Uni friend here - small world. Whilst this one is perhaps a little clinical for my liking it’s certainly worthy of a visit. Rated 7

The layout of this pleasant town pub is as described by others, below, though the colour scheme is now pale green paint and plenty of bare wood. The staff were really pleasant, and the atmosphere was relaxing despite the mildly irritating and wholly unnecessary background music. The beer was in excellent condition – as a St Austell house the choice was limited to Tribute, Trelawny and Proper Job, but it was all most enjoyable. I’m very happy to come back here, and I’d include in a crawl, it’s just a shame that opening hours are quite limited during the week.
