A pleasant enough pub tucked away on a quiet aside street near the Assembly Rooms from which it no doubt takes it’s name, but it is nonetheless only a short stroll from Bath’s premier shopping street. It is owned by the local Abbey Ales, and whilst not obviously a sports bar in appearance, that does seem to feature quite prominently and can be a little difficult to escape if that’s not your thing.

Internally it’s split in to two rooms with the one to the left being more of a bar with very limited seating and two pool tables dominating the space. The one to the right was a good size and somehow still managed to feel a little elegant despite the two or three TV screens showing the football and various other sports memorabilia such as flags, black and white rugby photographs and framed rugby shirts. Décor wise, there are black wooden boards on the floor and grey paintwork on the walls. A couple of fireplaces stacked full of logs were off to one side, although whether these are actually used or just decorative I’m not sure. Some very tacky exposed brick style wallpaper covered the rear wall and there was also a table football game here. A tiny courtyard garden was at the rear, and there were also a couple of tables and chairs on the pavement at the front. A couple of old leather sofas were in the window at the front which looked a decent enough spot to sit and relax.

Despite a sign saying that they had a continuously changing beer selection, the ones available on our visit were all from Abbey Ales with their Best Bitter, Bellringer and Bath Star. Ciders meanwhile were a trio from Thatcher’s with their Dry, Haze and Gold along with Bristol Steam cider, which is a new one on me.

A recently refurbished Abbey Ales pub set over two bars, my visit found it fairly dull on the ale front (Bombardier, Doom Bar and Abbey Bellringer) though quality was fine. It did have the wonderfully-named Hells Bells cider. Nice dark wood and burgundy interior. Darts available. Given the competition, this one certainly doesn’t appear essential at present.
