Situated on Queens Road, just off the Beverley Road and to the north of the city centre, this is a nice and traditional multi-roomed pub owned by Marston's.

There are 2 rooms off to the left of the entrance corridor, the front one containing the bar, and another off to the right. Just 2 other older customers and the landlord were present on my Tuesday afternoon visit. The customers were both playing darts in the bar.

The pub features in the current Good Beer Guide. But I can't say I'm a fan of Marston's beers. Regular cask ales are Wainwright, Old Empire & Sunbeam. The guest beers was The Rev. James. It looks like they have now dispensed of the boxed cider.

The landlord seemed initially suspicious of a stranger, but otherwise everybody seemed fairly friendly. Nice neighbourhood boozer, but a shame it is run by Marston's.

It doesn't look much from outside, but inside there is a good traditional pub with a number of nice original features, although a little marred by a 90's style makeover. The main room has a long bar for its size with peripheral seating and a dartboard tucked in the corner. Across the passageway to the right is a room with pool table and sports TV, while at the back is a further room and access to the beer garden and patio. A good row of handpumps offers ales from the extended Marstons range plus an occasional guest and there is also a boxed cider. Food is not served but takeaways can be brought in. Car park at rear.

A traditional multi-room pub that has been modernized but retains a bit of charm. Main bar to left on entry which is J shaped with a whacky pub carpet and well-tended bottle green banquette perimeter seating. There's a well-polished bar back here and most of the punters were in this one. A room off right of the corridor has a pool table and to the rear is a games room. Six pumps with four on from the Marstons stable; Thwaites Wainwright, Banks Sunbeam, Jennings Cocker Hoop and Marstons Old Empire which sadly was flat and felt like it had been on too long (looking back at my notes now, why didn’t I go for the Cocker Hoop??). A load of old GBGs on the window shelves presumably attests to its regular entry. I wanted to like it but unfortunately it didn’t quite measure up. Perhaps if I had tried the Cocker Hoop it would have been a different story? 6.5
