Quite rightly a CAMRA National inventory listed pub ,with an interior right out of the immediate post war period. It has a loyal following of a large crowd of regulars. You enter straight into a square front room with bench seating around the walls and formica topped round tables, you just have to say good evening on your entrance as eyes follow your way around in a friendly way. This then leads to a simple ,small tap room with a wooden faced bar. There is a front room accessed by a seperate front door but the lights were off.The island bar also serves a back lounge with another seperate entrance off the rear yard.
The tap room also had a grouping of regulars around the benches and the guv'nor told me that they don't bite and were happy for a stranger to pitch down in their midst.Conversation flowed smoothly ,much as it does in micro pubs and the pub was getting quite busy on my Friday evening visit.
The pub has been in the same family since around 1900,and there are no modern distractions like flatscreens, muzak, fruit machines while money is collected in a wooden drawer,no POS terminal here either.
There are 3 handpumps offering on my trip Tetley Bitter and Weetwood Eastgate (£2.80 but not on A1 form) ,while mainstream kegs were available all with low price points.
This is a must visit for anyone interested in pub culture of years gone by,the regulars are mature but decent folk so be prepared to contribute and you will be rewarded. Not far from the Shropshire Union at Bunbury Wharf.

Splendidly unspoilt and old fashioned basic brick-built pub situated a few miles outside Nantwich on the busy A51 road to Chester.

The four rooms in this friendly, family owned free house feature some ceiling beams, fixed bench seating and some unusual wicker seating. Notably the four rooms are located in 2 separate parts of the pub, accessed through different external doors. There's the seemingly compulsory outside toilets.

There's no fruit machines or music here - in this pub that is reminiscent of a different era, beer and conversation rule the roost.

The pub is listed in CAMRA's National Inventory of Unspoilt Interiors.

Another notable feature is a splendid bowling green behind the pub and, on my early evening visit, local players were arriving to practice in preparation for a league match the following day. Parking outside at the front of the pub was becoming difficult due to the volume of cars arriving and I noted that very few of the bowls players seemed to be using the pub.

Beers on were Weetwood Cheshire Cat and Eastgate, together with Tetleys Bitter, which, the friendly landlord told me, were now the regular offerings. The Cheshire Cat was in good form and, at £ 2.25p, noticeably cheaper than I had paid in Nantwich earlier.

The pub is a CAMRA Good Beer Guide regular and is well worth a visit if you like pubs of this nature. Do note, however, that it doesn't do weekday lunchtimes and do take care when exiting the car parking area back on to the main road as the traffic can be deceptively fast.
