A friendly modern refurbishment of an old pub, at first glance appearing to be keg only but there are three handpumps tucked away in a corner, on this visit offering Blue Monkey Infinity plus 1, Front Row Crouch and Bradfield Farmers Blonde. Nice enough without being exceptional.

A traditional pub, part of the Brampton Mile, having gone through the pupa stage of keg-only sports bar, now emerges as the butterfly that is the modern cask ale venue, with bright new front windows, repurposed floorboards on the walls and reconstituted stone flags on the floors. Too much brightness, repurposing and reconstitution for me, but at least the welcome we got seemed genuine and friendly. The lass who seemed to be running the place correctly guessed that we had been at the cricket in Queens Park, and on hearing that the match had ended two hours early immediately began to rearrange her staffing in readiness for a rush of sunburnt customers.

It was already pretty lively, being a Sunday afternoon, and we had got served pretty quickly. We both went for Marble Alf, which was in good condition (the others were Bradfield Farmers Blonde or Abbeydale Moonshine, neither of which is to my taste; there was also a peach cider), but this 5.4% pale is - like quite a few Marble beers - definitely not to my taste, and I left half of it. (Should have had the cider!)
