A small hotel which, although slightly upmarket, is nowhere near as posh as it looks at first sight. As mentioned below the main rooms are nicely historic, and provide a comfortable drinking location although certainly attracting lounge rather than public bar customers. A side room is laid up for dining but with few airs and graces. The menu is far from gastro but the food is good and the portions are commendable. There is a patio area at the back including covered sections. Two ales from Tring were available and seemed in excellent condition. Would happily return, especially if eating.

Little new to add to Mr Fastard's review below.
The Kings Lodge is more hotel and restaurant then boozer but the large room on entering is a dedicated bar area and even though people do eat more informally here than in the restaurant, there is no problem with just having a drink.
It's worth a visit just to enjoy the historical interior but the beer range isn't great with Tring Sidepocket and Pride on. The latter of which was decidedly unexceptional. The bar menu was decent quality pub grub and everything I saw looked very good.
I may return for something to eat but you just have to hope that there's a decent beer on.

ORIGINAL REVIEW March 2010.Food is the focus here and there is a large restaurant used by the hotel guests and visitors. We perused the munu which has substantial, traditional british fare with prices to match before sloping off.At the far end from the entrance is a small bar with Youngs Bitter and Bengal Lancer IPA on handpump and a chintz seating area were it is possible to drink without dining.

UPDATE
The front of this old building dating from 1642 is where what is known as Hunters Bar is located, with the serving counter at the rear left of a carpeted lounge. Two handpumps serving Tring Sidepocket and London Pride on my trip ,it seems from the many pumps clips that a Tring and Fullers ale are the most likely choices. This lounge has two original fireplaces in working order, one with a Royal coat of arms. The is some interesting pargetting plaster work on one ceiling section and there are a lot of original beams lending some character. Most people are here to dine but you can quite happily just come in to drink.
