Large country house sort of place set back on the hill way above the road, with a much extended Premier Inn adjacent. The 'house' part is the restaurant, with a large and comfortably furnished bar in the low-rise structure to the left - the door not well indicated from the extensive patio area outside. The carvery side much as you would expect but there is some welcome enthusiasm for the beers from the bar staff (and Cask Marque listing too) with a couple of changing guest ales joining the ubiquitous Doombar.

Different from Steve of N21's review below, as this is now a Toby Carvery with a Premier Inn bolt-on that serves Doom Bar at £3.15 and London Pride (x2) at £3.75 a pint respectively. Quite why its presence on this website would encourage you to visit here for a drink is anyone's guess, but at least you'll get a decent feed, unless you fancy viewing the wood-panelling wallpaper in the bar area.

Steve of N21 left this review about The Young Pretender

The Young Pretender is a large pub restaurant, but mainly restaurant in Kings Langley set back from the Hempstead Road next to the Premier Inn. It is owned by the Orchid Pub Company and is basically an upmarket Toby Carvery.
Internally it is several large areas all laid to dining with different flooring and different but mainly modern décor. Some have a standard restaurant décor, others are more like they’ve been designed by Footballers Wives let loose in Ikea.
There are two banks of three hand pumps amongst all the standard keg taps on the central bar section which were dispensing Sharps Doom Bar and Greene King IPA on two of them and the third was reversed but looked like it had been Black Sheep. This is not the type of place to visit for just a beer as it is primarily food focussed but at least it does have Ale available and my frozen pint of Doombar was OK once it had warmed up. The Carvery we had was generally OK, but as I class this more of a family restaurant (family because the Premier Inn next door attracts visitors to the Harry Potter Tour which is a mere 15 minutes away) than a pub and therefore recommend you view the reviews on Trip Advisor to get more of an impression what this place is like as a restaurant.
