A decent spoons which is nice and light inside with a real sun trap outside. We called in for breakfast and this was fine. Along with the usual trio there were three guests on.

As I suspected this is a conversion of an original pub but apart from the fact it has a car park you would never know. Inside it's a long room with the bar on the left and lots of high tables and chairs. There are some lower tables and chairs at the rear that lead to a lower area and a patio.
The bar has ten hand pumps which had two ciders, the JDW Trio Of Doom doubled, Salopian Shropshire Gold and Trumans Lazarus. The standard guest price here is £1.99 making it one of the dwindling number with the standard guest price under two quid. The problem is that there were only two guests but at least one of the ciders was the festival Pear Mania and at £2.45 was a good price.
Despite being a much better building than many the poor beer choice let this one down and I made a hasty retreat.

The recent refurbishment by Wetherspoons is quite a pleasant one, and the resultant building is light and airy, with an interesting banner or tapestry depicting Bolsover scenes of historical interest. On the bar are two sets of five hand pumps, with some usual suspects on one set (London Pride, Adnams Bitter, Sharps Doom bar, GK Abbot and Ruddles) and some interesting guests on the other. Of these, two were "coming soon" and the one that I asked for, Nutbrook Mild Side, had not been pulled through and, despite the best efforts of the bar person, could not be served while I was here, so I ended up with Wellbeck Abbey's Portland Black, the other option of an American "craft" take on a Belgian pale ale not quite tickling my fancy. It was quite pleasant here, as I say, but I can't help wondering about the impact of a 'Spoons on the other pubs in this small and rather depressed former mining town.
