A village pub which offers home-cooked food and really good beer. There is a small car park and a scruffy garden, and a low wall separates the pub from the main road. The bar is divided informally into two areas, and there is a dining room at the rear. It's flagstoned throughout the ground floor. In addition to the restaurant-style food there are bar snacks which are well cooked and very reasonably priced. The landlord has a robust sense of humour but is actually quite helpful, while the landlady was very welcoming. The locals were happy to see us and the atmosphere was good, at least until a passing tourist decided to bring in lively children and leave the door open. Dogs are welcomed, indeed encouraged. Ales on were Otter, Patriotteric and Cotleigh's Tawny Owl, plus Rosie's cider on draught. Beers were very well kept, and I think this pub must be a GBG candidate. It's on the Somerset Ale Trail, and I'd be happy to drop in any time when passing this far corfe.

We are staying overnight in Wrantage so decided to risk the 3/4 mile walk on the busy road which does not have a pavement some of the way and found the pub was not open despite the food all day 12 - 10 board outside. We sat in the pleasant garden a while, then I rang them and found they opened 5 pm so we enjoyed the garden till they opened up. A pleasant room with stone flagged floor and there was a bar area with another area off at the front with high chairs at the bar and a mix of tables and chairs and sofas in these 2 front areas. The back was set up for dining. Three cask ale hand pumps, 2 on with Otter Amber and Teignworthy Neap Tide. Felt they hadn't pulled enough beer off on the Teignworthy but the Otter Amber was fine.

Brew Guru left this review about The Canal

Came here not expecting much as the pub had been dying a slow death prior to closure. Was surprised and impressed by what has happened since, 4 ales (Otter bright, Exmoor Ale, Moor Revival and Cottage Whippet) plus good food. Keep it up Canal! Needs passing trade to survive as village is a collection of 4 or 5 houses on A378.
