CAMRA's Manchester pub of the year, and my half of Acorn Barnsley Bitter was certainly of appropriate quality (NBSS 4). We didn't see this building at its best, as the upstairs is having some work done on it, with scaffolding covering the whole building. But inside it's business as usual, with five beers on the bar. Easily reached by bus from Marple station, or a 15 minute walk. The rather jaunty and unnecessary music was turned down on request, but in my opinion the best pubs do very well without.

This pub is now a community pub and is traditional in décor and has a friendly and homely feel about it. The interior is quite small with the main bar positioned in the back room. There was a pool table in a small front room and an even smaller room on the left of the entrance. The main features in here was the tiled front entrance, which were the original tiles and the red leather buttoned bench seating in the front room.
On arrival we met a friendly local sitting at the bar, so it wasn't long until we got chatting, along with the manager, serving behind the bar. Six pumps with five in use, JW Lees, Track Brewery Sonama, Rossendale Floral Dance, Wainwright and Robinsons Unicorn. We went for the Track Sonama, which was a good session beer, so we were glad that we missed the bus and had to stay longer and drink more, until the next bus arrived. The bus stop is also across the road from the pub, which was very handy.
