They’ve gone with a funny set up of having food only one side, drinks only the other. It’s largely same as my last visit but a bit scruffier, there’s less decor Bonnie Prince Charlie has gone I’m glad to say, replaced by a telly. The service was a bit shite, but the beer ok.

Two pulls with Isle of Skye Red and Gold plus the usual selection of kegs there's a restaurant at one end, and a decent if stoney bar at the right end with a stone built and thatched counter in the centre between the two. Bonnie Prince bloody Charlie portraits to put off any old Glaswegian who knows the history of the ‘45. Definitely the most pub like place I tried and better than the others even if the beer choice is pretty much identical to that all over Portree.

Whitewashed stone building elevated slightly above the town square, the inside has a staple shaped interior with a stone flagged floor and a fairly traditional feel. There’s also a stone-fronted bar with a thatched roof ‘held down’ by hanging rocks, presumably in a nod to the crofting cottages on Skye, many of which employed a similar tactic back in the day. A dining area is to the left and general drinking to the right – here there is a blazing log fire with portraits of Bonnie Prince Charlie and Flora MacDonald hung above it. There’s also Ye Olde Sportse Televisual Boxe with football highlights on the go during our visit. Two local ales available from Isle of Skye - Red (very good) and Skye Gold (decent) served up by gruff barmaid who seemed unsettled by early lunchtime visitors. Overall it’s a decent stop if you’re in the town and is probably best sampled in the evening. 6.5

A proper pub, this, with a thatched bar, of all things! There's a dining area to the left and a collection of random furniture to the right, including a sofa by the fire which was very attractive to me on a cold, wet day. Somehow this all combines to give a proper pub atmosphere, the sort of place where time passes without you noticing.

On the bar are two hand pumps, one serving Stewart Edinburgh Gold and the other Caledonian Flying Scotsman. A moderately interesting beer selection, and although I've had the Flying Scotsman before I was impressed with the quality of this beer, which suggests that the landlord knows how to run a cellar. I spent quite a comfortable time here waiting for the rain to stop, which unfortunately it didn't, so I had only the memory of the fire here to keep me warm on my cycle ride to Broadford.
