A traditional town pub in a mixed terrace, no front garden as you step in straight from the footpath. It’s unspoilt in many respects, though that also means it’s a bit frayed around the edges. No frills, no pandering to unruly tourist families, just a good basic local. The front bar is in 3 seating areas formed presumably from 3 earlier rooms, one of them dining area, another a saloon-type bar with a single handpump. There is a second, separate bar behind, with two handpumps, although only one ale on Doombar. The rear room also has a pool table, a jukebox and a TV showing sports. The landlord and landlady were welcoming and pleasant, though some of the other customers looked a bit miserable. The Doombar was in good condition. A worthwhile visit, and it’s good to see a decent local doing well in today’s climate.
