Requested be closed with reason - Gone away: The original hotel was closed in 2012 and has since been repurposed with several retail outlets occupying the previous licensed premises. A new pub, has The Greenman, recently opened in another part of the building.

The Green Man and Blacks Head Royal hotel is a large old pub that is on the busy main road through Ashbourne, the pubs sign looks quite nice as it spans the road and this sign shows the pubs full and proper name.
When we first went in this pub it was a free house and there were two real ales on the bar we had a drink of Bass and this was a very nice drink the other beer was Greenalls bitter.
On our second visit the pub seemed pretty much as it used to be and we went in a smartish lounge that was very comfortable, there was a lot of handpumps on the bar and we had a drink of Leatherbritches Ashbourne Ale which was a very nice drink,i also noticed Bass and Pedigree on the bar plus a few micro brewey beers.
This was a decent pub and we were quite happy having a drink in here.

Another visit to this excellent pub found only four ales on hand pump. To be fair, it was a quiet midweek and it would be asking too much to have all six pumps on the go all the time. It's really an amalgamation of two pubs: the Green Man and the Blacks Head, as the old coaching sign across the street makes clear, but the shortened name is used on menus and the internet.
There are two bars: the Johnson Bar and the Boswell Lounge - presumably they both stayed here at some time (one in each pub?). The Johnson Bar is a modern affair but the Boswell gives the impression of being as old as the building itself, with wood panelling and leather chairs, sofas and pouffes (did they have pouffes in the 18th century?).
The walls are adorned with pictures and photos relating to "the game", the proto-football match which is re-enacted in Ashbourne every Shrovetide.

When I organised a minibus pub crawl in July 2010, this was the first stop on leaving Sheffield. The home since 2008 of the Leatherbritches brewery, formerly of Fenney Bentley. Sixteen of us invaded the Boswell Lounge, the smaller of the two bars, which went from empty to full in the blink of an eye. A stunning selection of ales included several Leatherbritches brews, of which Scoundrel at 4.1% proved popular, plus a number of other local ales including Blue Monkey Amarillo and Peakstones Rock Nemesis. We could happily have stayed here all day, but that would have been a waste of the minibus, and besides we had other treats in store (See Yew Tree, Cauldon in the Stoke-on-Trent section).
