Blimey, I have found a pub not reviewed by the usual PG Pilgrims. I feel like a pioneer on the cusp of a great discovery.
This was 0.25 miles from the house we were stopping at. That said, it was up the steepest hill navigable. At least on the return, we had gravity on our side.
The pub has been a regular in the GBG for 30 years. Lets start with the positives - a beautiful building, roaring fires, friendly staff and locals. We stopped at Dereks table, but Derek wasnt visibly annoyed. He couldnt jump in our grave quick enough when we left. Lots of articles of interest on the wales, including a 1972 newspaper clipper proclaiming it the oldest pub in North Wales. It suggested parts of it were 1200 years old. This, I find hard to believe.
Beer-wise - fairly average I would say. Theakstons Bitter in OK conition. A purple moose Pale Ale that was less good, but that is probably the brewery who I struggle to be amazed at. Both pints were kept slighty too cold for cask.
Its a multiple winner of best gastro pub in Wales. We had Sunday Lunch and it was perfectly pleasant, quickly served. Nothing earth shattering. Mrs M states that there is no place for new potatoes on a Sunday lunch and the cauliflower cheese was lacking in cheese. I enjoyed the lashings of gravy. £18.95.
A perfectly serviceable couple of visits but nothing too memorable.

“What a gem”
On a recent trip to Snowdonia I found the White Lion through the Good Pub Guide. Although in a tiny village it is only 5 minutes from the A55. The White Lion is everyone’s dream of their perfect local; beautiful setting, Real Ale, excellent wines, roaring open fires, friendly staff and superb food. I had the Welsh Lamb Shoulder, the best I have ever tasted. Talking with the landlord, Simon, I was assured that wherever possible all their ingredients are locally sourced and prepared on the premises. Their food is described as traditional home cooking and it is a perfect description. Anyone visiting North Wales must add this pub/restaurant to their itinerary. Next door is the Historic Village Church and records show there has been a place of worship there since 540AD, you should try and have a look around whilst you’re there. Alas I had to leave to continue my journey but it would have been all too easy to stay all day. Well done Simon & Nina for creating such a brilliant atmosphere well removed from the plastic chain pubs we see everyday.
