Just off the seafront in the pleasant neighbourhood of Broughty Ferry, the Fisherman’s Inn is a lovely old pub with a warm welcome. An entrance porch offers a choice of two different bars. A left turn takes you into the lounge, a smartly furnished room with plenty of nautical themed items on display, as you might expect. The room is split level and benefits from some great wood panelling. I, however, opted to turn right into the public bar, which has the servery along the rear wall and a run of banquettes opposite. One table here looks like it is used for playing various pub games whilst another has a 3D model of the town beneath its glass top. A TV on the front wall here was showing live snooker coverage with the commentary audible although I did visit fairly early in the day and can’t imagine that is representative of normal service. To the far right there is a large ship’s wheel mounted on the wall and beyond this there is a corridor which runs to the rear past a short section of bar counter. You emerge into a rear dining room with some great aerial views of the town on the walls, a large map of the local area and a selection of black and white photos. A lit fireplace stood to the left with a framed golf club and balls above and curved banquettes run around the rest of the wall space, serving a few tables which were all laid out with condiments and the like.
On the bar, I noted four ales – William Bros Birds and Bees, Stewart Jack Back, Greene King IPA Gold and Batemans Gold. I gave the Jack Back a try and thought it was a lovely drop, served up by a cheery landlady. A board next to the bar notes that this pub was CAMRA’s joint pub of the year winner back in 1993, which I wasn’t aware of prior to visiting. It also mentions that the pub was the only one in Scotland to feature in each of the first 30 editions of the Good Beer Guide.
I really liked this place and thought it was a great introduction to Broughty Ferry’s pub scene. I thought the pub was full of interesting bits of local history, was clearly proud of the town it represents and was also thoughtful towards the ales it serves. If I only had time to return to one pub in town, this would be the one I’d pick.

My local correspondent told me that this place was once a completely free house but is now a Belhaven (aka Greene King) pub. Don't let that put you off as for me this was the best option tried in town other than the JDW.
It's an old multi-roomed place with a dining room and accommodation but it also has a proper pub atmosphere and the beer choice certainly isn't strangled with GK options.
The six hand pumps had GK IPA, Deuchar's IPA, Taylor's Landlord, St Andrews Blonde, Harviestoun Schiehallion and Cairngorm Trade Winds. I went for the St Andrews beer (£3.15) which was in excellent nick.
I liked this place and it is GBG 2016 listed.
